Betty Nelson was a native of Port Allen, La., and attended Port Allen Colored Elementary School and McKinley High School in Baton Rouge. As a teenager in the early 1950s, Nelson became active in African-American voter registration in West Baton Rouge Parish. She attended Leland College, Southern University, Los Angeles City College, and the University of Southern California.
